Duke 95, Monmouth 52

Duke players were asked several times if they ever felt sorry for teams such as Monmouth in the NCAA tournament. Those questions were quickly dismissed after the Blue Devils’ 62-point first half. “We’re not in the business right now to make friends,” said Shane Battier, who had 21 points. Duke made a school-record 18 three-point shots in 38 attempts.

Duke 94, Missouri 81

On a day when coaches Mike Krzyzewski and Quin Snyder found it difficult to control their emotions, the best tandem in college basketball remained cool. Krzyzewski’s Duke team had too much Battier and Jason Williams for his former co-captain and assistant coach’s Missouri team as they combined for 58 points.

Duke 76, UCLA 63

Williams took over in the second half to send Duke to the regional finals for the 10th time in 16 years. Williams had a career high 34 points, scoring 19 in a row in the second half. Williams began his personal run with a three-point basket--one of six he had in the game--with 14:29 to play. He then scored four baskets on slicing drives, got another on a converted lob pass and two more three-point baskets.

Duke 79, USC 69

Williams scored 28 points and Battier had 20 points and 10 rebounds as Duke advanced to its ninth Final Four under Krzyzewski.

* National semifinals

Duke 95, Maryland 84

Duke was down by 22 points and Krzyzewski didn’t mince words. “You’re losing by so much, you can’t play any worse,” he told the Blue Devils during a timeout. “So what are you worried about, losing by 40?” Duke then dug out of its biggest hole of the season and into the NCAA championship game for the seventh time under Krzyzewski. It was also the third time in four games the Blue Devils had rallied to beat the Terrapins--each time from a double-digit deficit.

* Championship game

Duke 82, Arizona 72

The Blue Devils won their third national championship--and first since 1992 at the Metrodome--even though Battier and Williams combined for a tournament-low 34 points. Mike Dunleavy Jr.--playing in front of his father, Trail Blazer Coach Mike Dunleavy--picked up the slack with 21 points, 18 in the second half.
