Fullerton’s Fells to Play Football at UC Davis

Fullerton High’s Daniel Fells, a Times’ Orange County second-team selection, has signed to play football at UC Davis this fall, Fullerton Coach Julian Smilowitz announced.

Fells, a 6-foot-5, 215-pound receiver, caught 48 passes for 815 yards and eight touchdowns his senior season. He was an All-Freeway League and All-Southern Section Division IX selection and was recently named his league’s male athlete of the year.

SWIMMING

Fountain Valley swimmer Brandon Dotts said he has signed with UC Santa Barbara. Dotts, who has the county’s top time in the 50-yard freestyle (21.84) this season and holds the Barons’ record in the 100 backstroke (52.67), chose Santa Barbara over UC Irvine, UC Davis and Pacific.

SOCCER

Dave King has been named women’s soccer coach at Cypress College, the school announced Friday.

King, a 1990 graduate of El Modena High, was an assistant with Cypress last season and also coached the Cypress High girls’ team the last three seasons, leading the Centurions to two Empire League titles.

King replaces Ray Haas, who coached Cypress to two state titles and a 205-14-18 record in 10 years. Haas, 59, who had double bypass heart surgery last year, stepped down for health reasons.

SOFTBALL

Fullerton College second baseman Lisa Schiro will sign next week to play softball for Cal Baptist, Hornet Coach Lisa Bassi said.

Schiro, who played at Corona High, earned community college All-American honors last season and was selected as the Orange Empire Conference’s most valuable player. She is Fullerton’s all-time leader in runs. She is batting .368 this season after batting .388 last season.

ACADEMICS

UC Irvine’s Kareen Nilsson wasnamed to the Fall/Winter At-Large Academic All-America third team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Nilsson is a double major in English and drama who has made the dean’s honor roll 10 times. She was Big West Conference cross-country champion last fall.

BASKETBALL

Loara guard Nathan Von Achen has been selected to replace Ricky Porter in the North-South all-star boys’ basketball game April 28 at Orange Coast College. Porter pulled out because of a schedule conflict. Von Achen averaged 13.5 points and 9.2 rebounds per game last season for the Saxons.
