Manuel’s Hit Gives Glendale Lift, 12-11

John Manuel’s run-scoring single in the ninth inning lifted Glendale College to a 12-11 victory over Pierce on Saturday in a Western State Conference Southern Division game at Glendale.

Division-leading Glendale (26-8, 16-4 in conference play), which also defeated the Brahmas (21-12, 12-7) on Thursday, has a 3 1/2-game lead over Pierce with six games to play.

Evan Shahak had three hits, including his 13th home run, a three-run shot off Pierce ace Kurt Birkins in the first.

Canyons 6, Valley 4--Francisco Enriquez hit a two-run homer in the sixth and Luke Peterson had three hits for the Cougars (15-19-1, 11-9) in a WSC Southern Division game at Canyons.

Victor Samaniego and Chris Coleman each had two hits for Valley (5-26-1, 4-16).

Pepperdine 7-5, San Francisco 3-4--Dan Haren (8-2) pitched a seven-hitter and had four hits in the first game, and Noah Lowry (11-1) struck out 12 in eight innings in game two for the first-place Waves (30-12, 17-3) in a West Coast Conference sweep at Pepperdine.

The Master’s 7-3, Concordia 1-2--Matt Berry struck out 12 in the first game and Brad Hackworth pitched a seven-inning four-hitter for the Mustangs (19-22) in a nonconference doubleheader at Concordia.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Cal State Northridge 6-0; Long Beach 0-1--Jaclyn Fredrickson of Long Beach State (19-25, 8-6) homered against Sarah Farnworth (19-12) to lead off the 17th inning in the second game of a Big West Conference doubleheader at Long Beach.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Crescenta Valley 14, Templeton 0; Crescenta Valley 2, Buchanon 1--Meredith Cervenka (18-1) had 20 strikeouts in two games as the Falcons (19-1) won the Arroyo Grande tournament.

Thousand Oaks 8-8, Highland 0-4--Jenni Perez had three hits and eight runs batted in as the Lancers swept a nonleague doubleheader at Highland.

Perez hit two doubles and a triple for Thousand Oaks (14-3).

La Canada 1-2, Arcadia 0-1--Kelly Kalish (10-1) pitched a no-hitter and struck out seven for the Spartans in the opener of a nonleague doubleheader at Arcadia.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Kennedy 11, Carson 1--Chris Schreiber allowed three hits and struck out four in four innings for the Golden Cougars (14-9) in a Redondo tournament victory at Carson.

Phil Avlas had three hits and two RBIs, and Adam Geery hit a three-run triple for Kennedy (14-9).
