Edison’s Quickness Tops Esperanza’s Brawn in Sunset League

Share

Esperanza flexed its collective muscle Wednesday, but Edison won with speed and agility.

The host Chargers took first and second in the 100 and 200 meters and posted victories in 10 of the other 13 events, winning the Sunset League boys’ track and field meet, 88-43, and avenging losses to the Aztecs in the previous two years.

The Aztecs scored nearly half their points by sweeping the top three scoring spots in the shotput and discus.

Edison was led by junior Denny Flanagan, the county leader in the 110 hurdles, who won the event in 14.7 seconds, took first in the 300 hurdles in 38.9 and was second in the 100-meter dash in 11.1.

Edison’s Darryl Poston, the defending Orange County champion in the 100 and 200, won the 100 in 10.8, the 200 in 21.9 and the long jump in 21 feet 3 1/2 inches. Teammate Chuckie Linman won the 400 in 50.3 and was second in the 200 in 22.2.

Edison was also strong in the distance events and pole vault. Scott Brandos won the 1,600 in 4:32.9 and the 3,200 in 9:55.9, and Aaron Corbett went 14-6 to win the pole vault.
