More than 1,400 firefighters were on the line Saturday in the Mendocino National Forest, battling a wildfire that had consumed 10,200 acres of brush and trees.

The blaze, near Stonyford in Colusa County, began Wednesday and was reported to be 40% contained Saturday.

Five air tankers and 10 helicopters were aiding fire personnel from the U.S. Forest Service, the state Department of Forestry and local fire departments in the effort.

Spokeswoman Phoebe Brown said Saturday that firefighters saved 82 structures in and near the Happy Camp area on the eastern edge of that wilderness. However, 10 homes, most of them privately owned summer cabins, and six outbuildings were destroyed by flames Thursday and a small cabin and an outbuilding were destroyed Friday, officials said.

Brown said the fire is continuing to spread into the Snow Mountain Wilderness where firefighters can only gain access on foot.
