The sixth annual Loving Lucy Convention, honoring legendary television comedian Lucille Ball, kicks off with a dedication ceremony at the Hollywood sound stage where she shot the first episodes of her legendary sitcom in 1951. But most of the “I Love Lucy”-related action throughout the weekend--including tours, displays, panel discussions, celebrities, screenings and an auction--is happening at the Burbank Airport Hilton. One highlight: a 90-minute “I Love Lucy” feature film that was shelved after completion in 1952 and has never before been screened for the public.

The illusionary power of cinema will be on display for two nights as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences hosts the Big Bake-Off: Visual Effects Reels From the Academy Film Archive. Each year, producers submit reels of special effects to be screened and voted upon by academy members in an event nicknamed “VisFx Bake-Off.” Out of nearly 70 years of film, Oscar winner Richard Edlund (“Star Wars,” “The Empire Strikes Back,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark”) has compiled a historical overview in two segments. Tonight, “From ‘King Kong’ to ‘Star Wars”’ covers more than 40 years, including the 1940 classic “Thief of Bagdad.” Friday night’s screening concentrates on more contemporary work in “From ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ to ‘Terminator 2.”’ The highlights will be introduced and discussed by practitioners of the craft, including Craig Barron, Harrison Ellenshaw, Dennis Muren and Bill Taylor.
