No Damage Reported From Southland Quakes
Two moderate earthquakes struck four hours apart Thursday off the Southern California coast.
Both were centered seven miles southeast of the southern tip of San Clemente Island, lightly shaking Orange and San Diego counties but doing no damage.
Caltech seismologists said a magnitude 4.4 quake occurred at 11:04 a.m., followed by a 4.2 quake at 3:06 p.m. There also were two smaller quakes in the magnitude 3 range.
All the temblors were located in the frequently active San Clemente fault zone, 68 miles west of San Diego and 55 miles south of Long Beach.
