Jill Scott Receives Three Soul Train Awards

Newcomer Jill Scott captured three awards, including entertainer of the year, at the seventh annual Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards. Several entertainers at Tuesday night’s event dedicated their performances and awards to up-and-coming singer Aaliyah, who was killed with eight others in a plane crash in the Bahamas on Saturday.

“I know, with her talent, she would’ve gotten this award too,” Patti LaBelle said as she dedicated her Lena Horne Award for outstanding career achievement to the young star’s memory.

Aaliyah, 22, was nominated for rhythm & blues, soul or rap song of the year but lost to Yolanda Adams.

Scott’s “A Long Walk” won two solo artist awards: R&B;/soul single and R&B;/soul or rap new artist.

The program, taped at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, is to be broadcast Sunday at 5 p.m. on KTLA-TV.

Hip-Hop Artists Sue Pasadena Police

Two artists involved in a melee at the Source Hip Hop Music Awards at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium last year sued the show’s sponsors, the city of Pasadena and the Pasadena Police Department on Tuesday, alleging inadequate security measures and civil rights violations.

The Los Angeles Superior Court complaint was filed on behalf of David Blake, who goes by the stage name DJ Qui, and Crawford Wilkerson, who goes by the name High-C.

The pair claim that “unnecessary force” was used by the police and that they were “falsely imprisoned and handcuffed.” They ask for medical expenses, restitution of lost earnings and compensation for pain and suffering.

Pasadena police declined comment, and Source Publications--which publishes the Source magazine--could not be reached.
