Pick Six Carries the Day

Share

The last six races on Sunday gave today’s program at Hollywood Park a significant boost.

Thanks to upsets, most notably, Subpoena’s at 13-1 in the fifth, no one was able to hit the pick six, so there is a carry-over of more than $159,000.

Although the fields in races 3-8 aren’t particularly large, the races are competitive and there is not an overwhelming favorite in the sequence.

The pick six begins with a one-mile turf race for 2-year-old fillies running for a $62,500 claiming price. What makes this difficult is the fact that only one, Magical Nature, has run on turf and that import from England has hardly distinguished herself, finishing 11th of 13 in her first start and fifth of 14 in her last overseas race on Sept. 11.

In the fourth, older maiden fillies and mares will go 11/16 miles on the dirt and only Sunset Serenade has ever finished as high as second or third. She was third in her debut, then second on Nov. 1, both in races against claimers.

The fifth is a 51/2-furlong turf race for fillies and mares, the sixth brings together $32,000 3-year-olds at seven furlongs and Window B enters as the sharpest horse. The gray son of West By West has two wins and two seconds in his last four races for trainer Doug Peterson and one of his losses was by a head here last month.

Completing the sequence are the $50,000 Free House Stakes for 2-year-olds bred in California, and a six-furlong sprint for older state-bred maiden fillies and mares running for a $32,000 tag.

Race of the day: Debonair Joe is the 121-pound high weight in the 61/2-furlong Free House and the gelded son of Ole’ is one of only two two-time winners in the race. Co-owned and trained by Craig Lewis, Debonair Joe was beaten by only 41/2 lengths in the California Cup Juvenile after being part of the pace. The other double winner is Main Player, who has won two in a row for trainer Paul Aguirre.

Who’s hot: John Sadler. The trainer won two races Sunday with the debuting Pelirrojo, a gray son of Flying Continental, and Chalifoux. Sad-ler will send out first-time starter Spectacular Kaye in today’s eighth race.

Who’s not: Mike Luzzi. Through Sunday, the jockey was only three for 83 at Aqueduct.

Exotically speaking: A trifecta in the ninth using Gamblin Town on top to Stevia, Spectacular Kaye and Stellar Light in the second spot and all in the third spot.
