Giguere Is on a Roll

Share

Decisions, decisions.

Mighty Duck Coach Bryan Murray must make one for tonight’s game at Phoenix. For once, it’s a nice problem to have, choosing between Jean-Sebastien Giguere and Steve Shields in goal.

“There’s no question that we have two good goaltenders,” Murray said.

The problem is, Shields has started only two of the last 10 games.

The problem is, Giguere has a 1.27 goals-against average and a .953 save percentage in his last seven starts. He is 3-1-1-2 during that time.

“The temptation is to ride the hot goalie,” Murray said.

Giguere has been exceptional in December, even if he has lost four of his eight starts, including twice in overtime.

Paul Kariya moved back to left wing, where he has played most of his career, and had one of his strongest games Friday with a goal and several good opportunities in a 2-1 victory over Phoenix.

“I went to him before the game and said, ‘Go back to left wing, give it a look,”’ Murray said. “That probably didn’t have anything to do with it. The first chance he got, he beat a guy wide and got the rebound goal.”

Kariya said that being double-shifted helped but didn’t think the move was much of a factor.
