From Times Staff Reports

A man was booked on suspicion of murder after allegedly shooting his girlfriend in her South Whittier apartment early Monday.

Ronnie Stabler, 31, knocked on Mary Franco’s door shortly after midnight, then shot her once in the chest when she answered, said Deputy David Cervantes.

Franco, 37, had moved into the apartment on Laurel Avenue with her 13-year-old son a few months ago, neighbors said.

Neighbor Cindy Delgadillo said Franco was a very cheerful person. “I remember her saying this was going to be the best Christmas . . . and she didn’t even make it to see Christmas,” Delgadillo said.
