Bill Dwyre Forgot a Tennis Legend?

Share

Times Sports Editor Bill Dwyre gave us a gift with his Christmas Day column (“Cherish the Thought”) by providing nostalgic tributes to 10 sports personalities with “decades of stature in the Los Angeles sports community.”

Such an impressive list must include tennis legend Jack Kramer, who fits Dwyre’s gift requirement of having “some wrinkles” and being “nicely broken in.”

As the sports world knows, Southern California has always been the hotbed of tennis talent and Jack Kramer personifies the best in the sport and deserves the title, “the father of modern tennis.” He innovated the serve-and-volley game in the 1940s that started the era of power tennis. Jack Kramer’s legacy began in Los Angeles and we tennis enthusiasts appreciate that he still walks among us.
