Entering Buena’s Channel League girls’ game against San Marcos on Thursday night, senior Kelly Greathouse needed 72 rebounds to break the school career mark of 1,127 held by her sister, Nicole.

Kelly Greathouse, a 6-foot-3 post player who has committed to North Carolina State, is averaging 22 points and 11.9 rebounds. Buena (22-0), ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today, hosts No. 3 Harbor City Narbonne (17-2) on Saturday night.

It could be the biggest basketball game, boys’ or girls’, ever played in the region.

The Indians (11-12, 3-4) have wreaked havoc on the race for first place between Valencia, Hart and Saugus.

Last week, Burroughs registered a 60-51 upset of Hart (16-5, 5-2), then had a 63-53 surprise for Valencia (18-5, 5-2) on Tuesday.

“Nobody likes playing at our place,” said Coach Doug Nicol, whose team hosts first-place Saugus (19-3, 6-1) tonight. “It can be a pit.”

The upsets also make tonight’s game between Hart and Valencia huge.

“I don’t think you can win this league again with three losses,” said Coach Jerry Mike, whose Valencia team won the outright title last season with a 7-3 record.
