Buendia Helps Chapman Top Vanguard in Softball


Linsey Buendia allowed five hits and struck out six to help Chapman defeat Vanguard, 4-0, in a nonconference softball game Saturday at Vanguard.

Dawn Lopez singled home Melissa Summerline in the fourth inning and the Panthers (1-0) put the game out of reach with three runs in the seventh, one on Theresa Cronin’s RBI single, the other two unearned. Buendia did not walk a batter.

Nikki Benning had two hits for Vanguard (0-1). Gina Liebengood (0-1) gave up seven hits and had two seventh-inning wild pitches.


In nonconference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 10-3, New Mexico 2-11--Yasmin Mossadeghi hit two home runs and Amanda Hockett went three for three with a home run and four RBIs as Cal State Fullerton (3-1) won the first game of a doubleheader at the New Mexico Diamond Invitational.

Mossadeghi and Jenny Topping hit home runs in the second game, but New Mexico (3-2) scored nine runs in the fourth inning to wipe out a 3-2 deficit.

Both games went five innings due to the tournament’s eight-run mercy rule.

Hope International 0-1, Occidental 4-0--Sarah Yarbrough’s RBI single in the third gave the Royals (1-1) a victory in the second game. Jody Richards (1-0) picked up the win with a two-hit shutout.

In nonconference baseball:

Concordia 11, CS Dominguez Hills 6--First baseman Nick Swanson homered, doubled, singled twice and drove in six runs for visiting Concordia (3-0).

Vanguard 17-4, UC San Diego 11-6--Samuel Baeder hit a three-run, fifth-inning homer and Garold Shaffer (2-2) got the win in the first game.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:

Fresno Pacific 62, Vanguard 61--Debbie Candelaria missed a two-footer at the buzzer for host Vanguard (14-7, 7-5), which led, 30-23, at halftime. Becki Huddle had 20 points and seven assists, Candelaria had 13 points and Robbin Dittenbir had 12 rebounds for the Lions.


Teresa Kamps had 20 points and 13 rebounds for Fresno Pacific (18-7, 9-3).
