Pepperdine Gets Ball Rolling, 6-4

Dane Ball went three for three with three runs batted in during Pepperdine’s 6-4 nonconference victory over Louisville on Tuesday at Pepperdine.

Woody Cliffords, formerly of El Camino Real High, hit a two-run single during a three-run fourth inning that gave Pepperdine (5-0) a 5-1 lead.

Eric Valenzuela (1-0) surrendered four hits, struck out five, walked five and allowed an unearned run in five innings.

Greg Ramirez, a Rio Mesa High graduate, allowed two runs in four innings to earn his second save of the season.

Westmont 8, Cal Lutheran 2--Mike LaRue hit a pinch grand slam in the sixth inning to power the Warriors (5-1) in a nonconference game at Westmont.

Ryan Cooney had two hits for Cal Lutheran (1-2).

The Master’s 7, Claremont-Mudd 6--Erik Jones’ seventh-inning home run snapped a 6-6 tie and the Mustangs won their home opener.

Jesse Rebello had four hits and drove in five runs for Master’s (3-0).

Ty Sager and Andy Salazar each had three hits for the Mustangs.

Valley 7, Antelope Valley 6--David Lopez had two hits, including a double, and the Monarchs (1-4) rallied from a 4-0 deficit in a nonconference game at Valley.

Matt Jackson (1-1) of Valley struck out six, walked four and scattered 10 hits.

Brandon Golphenee had two hits, including a triple, for Antelope Valley (0-1).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Antelope Valley 63, Barstow 60--Tina Carrillo made two free throws with 11 seconds to play to secure a Foothill Conference victory for the Marauders at Barstow.

Carrillo had 12 points.

Sarah Meng had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Antelope Valley (16-12, 7-4).

Cal Lutheran 66, Pomona-Pitzer 51--Maricella Rodriguez made 10 of 17 shots to score 20 points for the Regals (17-4, 6-2) at Cal Lutheran, which moved to within one-half game of first place Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Buena 10, Dos Pueblos 8--Danielle Rios had three goals and Vanessa Avendano had two at Buena to help the Bulldogs secure third place in the Channel League and a berth in the Southern Section Division II playoffs.

Ana Christie had 17 saves for the Bulldogs (9-10, 3-4).

Notre Dame 9, Louisville 6--Sammy Zuckerman had six goals and four steals at Notre Dame to help the Knights clinch second place in the Mission League and their first appearance in the Southern Section Division III playoffs.

Trisha Prudencio, Kristin Kaplan and Jen Santoro also scored for the Knights (12-4, 6-1), and Prudencio had nine of Notre Dame’s 25 steals.

Zuckerman has 61 goals this season.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Newbury Park 6, Moorpark 0--Jon Krupansky and Daniel Schwaiger each scored two goals, and Michael Falcone had three assists in a Marmonte League game at Newbury Park (15-4-2, 8-1-1).

Burbank 2, Burroughs 1--Daniel Cuello scored the winning goal on a penalty kick in the 60th minute of a Foothill League game at Burroughs.

Paraclete 5, L.A. Baptist 0--Paul Watts scored three goals and the Spirits clinched the Alpha League title at Paraclete.

Paraclete (13-1-3, 6-0-1) held the Knights to two shots and goalkeeper Travis Sharp recorded his seventh shutout of the season.

Kilpatrick 5, Village Christian 2--Jorge Santillana scored four goals and the Mustangs (14-5, 4-1-2) won an Alpha League game at Village Christian.

It was the seventh game this season in which Santillana has scored three or more goals.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Buena 4, Santa Barbara 0--Natalie Sanderson scored three second-half goals and the Bulldogs clinched their ninth consecutive Channel League title at Santa Barbara and eliminated the Dons from playoff contention.

Viewpoint 2, Oakwood 1--Melody Yazdanyar had a goal and an assist in a Liberty League victory for the Patriots (10-7, 6-4) at Viewpoint.

Yazdanyar has 26 goals in 17 games.
