Cal Lutheran’s Streak Bogs Down at Claremont-Mudd, 87-72

Victor Esquer scored 24 points and Justin Muth had 20 but Cal Lutheran suffered its first California Intercollegiate Athletic Assn. loss of the season, 87-72, Saturday night at Claremont-Mudd.

Claremont-Mudd halted Cal Lutheran’s 12-game winning streak, second-longest in NCAA Division III this season and second-longest in school history.

The Kingsmen (16-5, 9-1 in conference play) trailed, 52-38, at halftime but pulled to 70-66 with 5:22 left. Claremont-Mudd pulled away with a 9-0 run.

Claremont-Mudd (10-11, 7-3) beat Cal Lutheran by the same score in 1994 to end the Kingsmen’s 15-game winning streak.

Valley 86, Glendale 76--Damarcus Ellis and Chanzie Washington each scored 16 points for the Monarchs (20-10, 9-1) in a Western State Conference Southern Division victory at Valley.

Eskias McDaniels scored 18 points for the Vaqueros (18-10, 6-4).

Moorpark 74, Santa Barbara 62--Lester Strong scored 21 points to lead the Raiders (20-5, 7-1)in a WSC Northern Division victory at Santa Barbara.

Canyons 75, Citrus 50--Nic Echevestre made five of six free throws in the last two minutes to lift the Cougars (11-18, 6-5) in a WSC Southern Division game at Citrus.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Riverside 71, CS Northridge 64--LaShaunda Fowler made seven of eight shots and scored 16 points, but the Matadors (8-13) fell at UC Riverside.

Fowler was called for a flagrant foul and ejected with six minutes left after hitting Amy Houchens of Riverside in the face.

Santa Clara 63, Pepperdine 61--Damaris Hinojosa scored 15 points for the Waves (17-8, 6-3) in a West Coast Conference loss at Pepperdine.

Glendale 63, Valley 58--Marilyn Dubon scored 18 points to for the Vaqueros (16-12, 6-4) in a WSC Southern Division victory at Valley.

San Bernardino 66, Antelope Valley 62--Kristel Jones scored 15 points for the Marauders (17-13, 8-5) in a Foothill Conference loss at Antelope Valley.

BOYS’ WRESTLING

Santa Fe 41, Thousand Oaks 34--Andy Maldonado won at 119 pounds and brother Juan won at 135 in the Lancers’ first-round loss in the Southern Section Division III dual meet championships at Corona Centennial High.

North Torrance 49, Simi Valley 18--Greg Crowley won a 9-8 decision at 134 for the Pioneers in a Division III loss.
