Castoff Computers Headed for Mexico

City officials are donating 65 outdated computers to Hermosillo, Mexico--Irvine’s sistercity.
The computers, no longer able to handle demands at City Hall, will be set up in Hermosillo’s youth center and municipal library to benefit residents there. Irvine school officials said they had no use for the computers, which they said would cost too much to upgrade. The computers are valued at about $75 each for a total value of $4,875.
The Irvine Sister Cities Foundation, which has worked with Hermosillo for 10 years on projects that promote education for young people on both sides of the border, asked that the surplus computers at City Hall be donated to the sister city.
The foundation’s goal is to collect and donate at least 100 computers. The group has also received 20 computers donated by local businesses.
