The sponsor of the preseason National Invitation Tournament sued the NCAA on Thursday, claiming the largest organization in college basketball was trying to put it out of business.

The lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan accused the NCAA of violating federal antitrust laws by considering rules designed to end preseason tournaments.

NCAA conference commissioners voted in September to eliminate the so-called exempt events, which count as one game on a school’s 28-game schedule regardless of how many games a team actually plays. These events include the Maui Invitational, Great Alaska Shootout, Preseason NIT and Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.
