The Los Angeles Police Department has named a new top commander for the San Fernando Valley, promoting Ronald Bergmann to deputy chief of the Valley Bureau.

Bergmann, 54, was promoted Sunday from commander of the department’s administrative group by Chief Bernard Parks. He replaced Michael Bostic, who became commander of the LAPD’s human resources department.

Bergmann said he was going to make it a priority to visit the five divisions that cover the Valley.

“I want to get out to as many roll calls as I can,” said Bergmann, who was born in Chicago and graduated from the University of Illinois with a bachelor’s degree in business. He also earned a master’s in public administration at USC.

“I’m going to take the attitude that I want to see what’s going on before I shake things up,” Bergmann said. “I may not have to shake anything up.”

Bergmann, who is an Air Force veteran, joined the LAPD in 1973. He has served in the Foothill, Hollywood, Southeast, 77th Street and West Valley divisions.

As commanding officer of West Valley, Bergmann was in charge of more than 180 sworn and civilian personnel.

Bergmann expressed a desire to exchange ideas with influential people in the Valley.

“I want to meet with the movers and the shakers of the community,” Bergmann said.
