Los Alamitos Surprises Marina in Water Polo

Jessica Levin’s goal in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter gave Los Alamitos a 4-3 victory over sixth-ranked Marina in a Sunset League girls’ water polo game Wednesday at the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos.

Drue Wawrzynski scored for Los Alamitos to tie the score, 3-3, with 2 minutes 58 seconds left in the third quarter. Wawrzynski was also a key to the Griffin defense, holding Cara Chiebicki, Marina’s top player and a U.S. Junior National team member, scoreless.

Sarah Kilgore had 17 saves for Los Alamitos (11-5, 1-0).

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 7 Laguna Beach 9, No. 8 Corona del Mar 6--Teresa Codini teamed with twin sister Tina to score seven goals for Laguna Beach (14-4, 1-0).

Teresa Codini, the Artists’ leading scorer with 60 goals this season, had four goals.

In the Sea View League:

No. 3 Newport Harbor 7, No. 4 Irvine 2--Katherine Belden and Jenna Booth scored two goals each and Heather Deyden had eight saves for Newport Harbor (11-2, 1-0).

Senior Nicole Lorrimer and sophomore Sarah Hamilton scored for Irvine (7-4).

In the Empire League:

Katella 12, Kennedy 5--Krista Wirthgen scored all five of her goals in the first half as Katella (6-10, 0-1) opened an 8-2 first-half lead. Gracie Reyes had 10 saves for Katella.

In nonleague games:

No. 5 Santa Margarita 8, El Dorado 2--Christina Kunkel had four goals and Erin Figge had three for visiting Santa Margarita. Heather Stamper scored both goals for El Dorado.

In Freeway League girls’ basketball:

No. 5 Troy 91, La Habra 29--Five players scored in double figures for the Warriors, led by Kianey Givens-Davis with 18 points and nine rebounds. Alicia Komaki had 17 points and 12 assists for Troy (11-4, 1-0), Amanda Livingston had 17 points, Veronica Johns-Richardson 12 and Meghan McGuire 10.
