Stanford Makes Speedy Recovery

Oregon State’s slowdown tactics worked for the first half of Thursday night’s Pacific 10 Conference game against No. 1-ranked Stanford at Maples Pavilion.

Then the Cardinal got up to speed.

Casey Jacobsen made four three-point shots and scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half as Stanford steadily pulled away to a 73-49 victory in its first game since becoming the top-ranked team in the Associated Press poll. The Cardinal, 14-0 overall and 3-0 in the Pac-10, and Georgetown (14-0) are the only remaining unbeaten teams in Division I.

Oregon State (6-8, 0-2) dressed only eight players, but controlled the first half with an excruciatingly slow offense and tough defense. The Cardinal didn’t score until Jacobsen made a free throw nearly five minutes into game and didn’t get a field goal until reserve Julius Barnes made a jumper with 12 minutes left in the half.

Oregon State couldn’t fully capitalize on Stanford’s poor shooting and foul trouble for twins Jason and Jarron Collins, however, and trailed, 24-23, at halftime. Stanford used a full-court press to open the second half and went on runs of 11-2 and 11-3 to take the Beavers out of their deliberate offense.

Led by Barnes’ career-high 15 points, Stanford’s reserves scored 26 after getting none in a victory over Arizona last Saturday.

California 78, Oregon 62--Sean Lampley’s 23 points and 10 rebounds led the the Golden Bears (10-4, 2-1) past the Ducks (10-2, 1-1) at Berkeley.

Lampley made all nine of his free throws, and Cal missed only once in 20 attempts. Oregon shot 32.3%.

No. 21 Arizona 84, Washington State 51--Gilbert Arenas made all six of his three-point shots and scored 22 points at Spokane, Wash., as the Wildcats (9-5, 2-1) beat the Cougars (6-6, 0-3). Arizona again played without Coach Lute Olson, whose wife Bobbi died last week.

Arenas and Jason Gardner made four consecutive three-point shots in a 27-6 run that helped give the Wildcats a 41-19 halftime lead.

Washington State shot 31% en route to a season-low point total and has lost by a combined 74 points in Pac-10 games.

Washington 70, Arizona State 68--The Huskies (7-8, 1-2) made free throws for nine of their 12 overtime points at Seattle, then held on for their first victory in five games as the Sun Devils (8-6, 0-3) missed two shots in the final five seconds.

Kyle Dodd’s three-point shot was short and Donnell Knight’s putback did not hit the rim as time ran out. Knight scored the final points of regulation with a putback of his own missed shot with 7.7 seconds left.
