Calvary Chapel probably could have won the Five Counties tournament without Willie Park, but Park couldn’t have won without Calvary Chapel.

Park, a senior transfer from Villa Park, won the individual title at 171 pounds Saturday, helping the Eagles win the team title for the second consecutive season at Fountain Valley High.

Calvary Chapel scored 221 1/2 points in the two-day, 63-team tournament. Bakersfield was second (205) and Poway third (195).

Park defeated Ryan Halsey of Rancho Buena Vista, 8-4, to avenge a two-point loss to Halsey at the Reno Tournament of Champions last weekend. Park said he couldn’t have done it without the high-tech coaching available at Calvary Chapel.

“After I lost to him, we went back and watched the videos and whatever I did wrong I fixed,” Parks said. “At Villa Park, I never had any videos to watch and when I lost I couldn’t see what I needed to work on.”

Calvary Chapel Coach John Azevedo said Park’s victory was one of the highlights of the tournament.

“Halsey is one of the best wrestlers in the country and Willie just dominated him,” Azevedo said.

The Eagles had a 13 1/2-point lead over Poway heading into the final round and a 20 1/2-point lead over Bakersfield. Poway had won this tournament two of the last three years and Bakersfield defeated the Eagles in a dual meet earlier this season.

Calvary Chapel had six wrestlers advance to the final round, compared to four for Bakersfield and two for Poway.

Steve Esparza, who has been battling a hip injury for two weeks, defeated top-seeded Andy Kim of Poway, 11-5, in the 130-pound final. Like Parks, Esparza also won a rematch from the Reno tournament.

Calvary Chapel’s Conan Williams had four pins leading up to his 189-pound final, then defeated Howard Wyatt of Santa Ana, 7-5, in overtime.

Calvary Chapel sophomore Mario Estrada lost to Bakersfield freshman Nathan Morgan in the final of the 103-pound division. Estrada was down, 9-3, in the third period, but closed to within one point with a takedown and a two-point nearfall with 33 seconds left.

Morgan got a point with an escape, but Estrada countered with a two-point takedown to tie the score, 10-10, with 15 seconds remaining. Estrada tried to hold on and force overtime, but Morgan managed a two-point reversal with five seconds left to earn the victory.

Estrada had advanced to the final after upsetting top-seeded David Villagran of Brawley in a quaterfinal, 5-4. Estrada, seeded eighth, scored a takedown in the final 10 seconds to defeat Villagran.

Calvary Chapel’s Frank Gill also lost a close match, 3-2, to top-seeded Andrew Spradlin of Bakersfield at 135 pounds, and the Eagles’ Joe Collins lost in overtime, 5-3, in the 160-pound final against top-seeded Drew East of Sacramento American River.

Williams was one of three wrestlers from the county who were top-seeded in their weight class, but he was the only one to take home a title.

Loara’s Orlando Galvan, who won a state title at 103 pounds last season, lost to Logan Ingram of Clovis Buchanan, 12-10, in overtime.

Santa Ana’s Ozzy Avalos, who was 31-2 with 15 pins coming into the 152-pound final, lost to Bakersfield Centennial’s Sean Sheets, who pinned him with 1:06 remaining in the third period.
