Tustin’s McCoy Commits to San Diego State

Tustin linebacker Matt McCoy, a Times’ Orange County first-team selection, was among three Tillers announcing their college commitments, Coach Myron Miller said.

McCoy, 6 feet 1 and 200 pounds, has committed to San Diego State. Linebacker Frostee Rucker, a Times’ second-team selection, has committed to Colorado State. Offensive lineman Ben Baker committed to Duke.

* Mater Dei linebacker Ian Gunderman, a Times’ Orange County first-team selection, and teammate Grant Melton, a fullback, have committed to Northern Arizona, Monarch Coach Bruce Rollinson said.

WATER POLO

Three scholarship players have left the UC Irvine women’s team, Coach Julie Swail said.

Jessica Chang, Kim Fazio and Chantel Trees quit the team, which has yet to play its first game. According to a school spokesman, the players did not ask for releases that would allow them to talk to other schools about transferring.

Swail also said junior Nerissa Reidenbaugh, formerly of Dana Hills High, has transferred to Irvine from Saddleback College and will play this year.

The Anteaters open their first season Feb. 9 at the UC San Diego tournament.

BASEBALL

Junior Iboa, a right-handed pitcher from L.A. Roosevelt High, said he has committed to play baseball at UC Irvine. Iboa had a 12-3 record last season.

VOLLEYBALL

The Long Beach State men’s team dropped a spot to No. 2 in the nation behind Pepperdine in the first weekly rankings released by the American Volleyball Coaches Assn.

The 49ers were the preseason No. 1 pick, but finished third at the Santa Barbara tournament. Pepperdine finished fifth in Santa Barbara, but won the UC Irvine tournament.
