GREENVALE, N.Y. — Marjorie Cordero, the wife of Hall of Fame jockey Angel Cordero Jr. and a former jockey, trainer and agent, was killed in a hit-and-run accident while jogging. She was 41.
She was hit about a half-mile from her house Monday night, police said, and died at North Shore University Hospital.
A police spokesman said Tuesday it is believed Cordero had been struck by a Ford but did not give more details.
“There was an argument between her and her family,” Det. Sgt. William Cox said. Cox said she apparently wanted to meet a friend, but her family did not want her to leave.
Police were called at about 7:30 p.m. by the family. Cox said she left the house at 8, and was hit at about 9:45.
Marjorie Cordero was a jockey from 1982-85, winning 71 races from 911 mounts and earning more than $1 million in purses. She rode her first horse for trainer Nick Zito on Jan. 31, 1982.
Cordero turned to training and won 42 races from 400 starters from 1985-99. Most recently, she served as the agent for jockey Hector Rosario.
Her husband retired from racing on May 7, 1992, after a near-fatal spill at Aqueduct five months earlier.
