Valaika Makes the Sacrifice, Hart Downs Channel Islands
Sophomore shortstop Chris Valaika hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning Friday to lift Hart High past Channel Islands, 3-2, in a semifinal game of the Westside baseball tournament Blue Division at Hart.
Hart (4-0) plays Hawthorne for the Blue Division championship today at 11 a.m. at Redondo High.
Phil Tognetti (2-0) pitched a six-hitter while striking out six and walking none.
Chris Gagnon homered for Hart, with Valaika and Nick Enciso each contributing two hits.
Mike Garcia of Channel Islands (2-2) struck out six.
Sylmar 2, Alemany 1--Stefen Shaw hit a run-scoring single with one out in the seventh inning to give the Spartans a Red Division semifinal victory at Sylmar.
Marco Estrada (3-0) relieved Jamie Mah and struck out two in the last inning.
Shaw, Mike Garcia and Jesus Martinez each had two hits for Sylmar (4-0).
The Spartans, who play Chatsworth in the Red Division championship game at 2 p.m. today at Redondo High, also scored on a first-inning error.
Alemany (3-1) scored on a second-inning error.
San Fernando 4, Westchester 2--Abraham Gonzalez struck out eight and gave up no earned runs, and Ruben Jimenez hit a two-run triple in the fourth inning for San Fernando (3-1) in a Westside tournament Blue Division consolation game at Westchester.
Moorpark 8, Culver City 6--Chris Nealon had two hits and drove in two runs for the Musketeers (2-2) in a Westside tournament consolation game at Culver City.
Hawthorne 8, Hueneme 0--Gharrett Levette and a double, single and a stolen base, but Hueneme (3-1) lost in a Westside tournament Blue Division game at Hawthorne.
Kennedy 9, Valencia 2--Eric Moore had three hits, including a two-run double, and pitched five innings to help host Kennedy advance to the championship game against Lancaster of the San Fernando Valley tournament.
Moore (2-0) allowed one unearned run on five hits, with five strikeouts and one walk.
Joey Morelli had three hits, including a run-scoring double, for Valencia (2-2).
Lancaster 13, South Gate 10--Josh Pratt doubled home the go-ahead run and the Eagles scored two more runs on errors in the eighth inning of a San Fernando Valley tournament victory at South Gate Park.
Art Ortiz hit a solo home run and had two runs batted in for Lancaster (3-0-1).
St. Francis 4, El Camino Real 0--Matt Hirsh (1-0) pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts and five walks for the Golden Knights in a San Fernando Valley tournament victory at El Camino Real (2-2).
Matt McColgan had a run-scoring single and a bases-loaded walk for the Golden Knights (3-1).
Ventura 1, Crossroads 0--Matt Frick hit a home run in the second inning of a Westside tournament game at Clover Park in Santa Monica.
The Cougars (2-2) turned three double plays and Ryan Tanner pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts.
Oakwood 2, L.A. Lutheran 0--Jake Tepper had three hits, including an RBI double, and scored a run, and Tony Shayne pitched a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts for host Oakwood (1-0) in a nonleague victory.
