Palmdale infielder Tyrone Culver will likely miss the rest of the season after separating his left shoulder before a game against Thousand Oaks on March 9.

Culver, a senior, injured his shoulder when he dove for a ball and landed awkwardly during warm-ups. He sustained the same injury during his sophomore football season.

Even if Culver is cleared to play later this season, he may sit out. Culver accepted a football scholarship to Fresno State and said he wants to be ready for his freshman season.

“I’ll see what the doctor says,” Culver said. “There are a lot of things I have to consider. I want to play again, but I have to take into consideration Fresno State and my scholarship.”

While he is best known as a defensive back, Culver has received attention from professional baseball scouts. Culver batted .537 last season with four home runs while playing second base.

“A lot of pro scouts have been calling and I don’t want that all to slip away,” Culver said. “I just want to keep all my options open.”

Palmdale sophomore Troy Harrington is quickly making a name for himself.

Harrington, the younger brother of Matt Harrington, the No. 7 selection in last spring’s major league baseball draft, made his first start of the season Tuesday against Canyon. He gave up one run on four hits in five innings.

Troy Harrington (1-0), whose fastball was clocked in the low 80s, had three strikeouts and three walks. At the same age, Matt Harrington threw in the high 80s.

But Troy doesn’t welcome comparisons to his brother.

“There is a little competition between us, but I am not trying to be Matt,” Troy said. “I hope no one expects me to be him. I just want to keep getting better.”

Matt doesn’t want to put any added pressure on his brother.

“We are different people,” Matt said. “He could turn out to be 100 times better than anyone expects. I think he is doing fine so far.”
