Formal discussions began Friday to make Bob Knight the new coach at Texas Tech. Knight, fired six months ago at Indiana for violating behavior policy, met with Texas Tech’s president, chancellor and four regents seeking to turn around the Red Raiders’ losing basketball program. Texas Tech president David Schmidly said he planned to meet next week with faculty members who signed a petition against Knight. The petition, signed by 71 of the more than 900 faculty members, cited several highly publicized outbursts during Knight’s 29 seasons with the Hoosiers. Knight did not speak to reporters Friday, but he said Thursday the job appealed to him “tremendously.” . . . Darelle Porter, the nation’s second-youngest Division I coach when he was hired age 28 by Duquesne in 1998, resigned after going 23-64 in three successive losing seasons.
