Police on Wednesday shot and wounded a man they said fired shots at them as he fled from Gilbert Lindsay Park in South L.A.

The shooting occurred around 3 p.m. as two police officers working in an anti-gang program approached a group, said Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Lt. Horace Frank. One of the men fled toward 42nd Street and as the officers chased him he shot at them, Frank said.

Police returned fire, hitting the man, believed to be in his early 20s, in the right leg, Frank said. The man, whose name was not released, was treated at a local hospital and then taken into custody.

While police chased the man, others in the group allegedly vandalized a police car with trash cans, Frank said. It was unclear whether any of these men were taken into custody.
