McDonald Had His Hands Full

Stanford guard Michael McDonald had an off night statistically, according to Cardinal Coach Mike Montgomery. But the Cardinal isn’t looking for a lot of point production from his spot anyway.

McDonald was one of three guards Stanford threw at Cincinnati’s Kenny Satterfield, who led all scorers with 24 points. McDonald, who got into foul trouble, finished with three rebounds, two assists and three turnovers in 22 minutes.

Julius Barnes, a reserve, helped slow Satterfield a bit, putting in 21 minutes of work with three turnovers and and two rebounds. Neither McDonald or Barnes scored.

McDonald is from Long Beach Poly High, Barnes from Rowland Heights Rowland.

“I thought Julius did a very good job on Satterfield,” Montgomery said. “He squared him up several times. Mike was having a difficult time, but then we went to a zone.”

McDonald is the son of former Long Beach State All-American and Boston Celtic forward Glenn McDonald, the Long Beach State women’s basketball coach.

It was a record-setting night for the Cardinal. Senior Ryan Mendez scored his 1,000th point with his first basket of the game. He finished with 16 points. He also leads the nation in free-throw percentage and he was two for two at the line Thursday, raising his average to 94.8% (92 of 97). He has made 14 consecutive free throws. Sophomore Casey Jacobsen tied the Cardinal season records for three-point baskets with his second basket. He has 82 this season and is tied with Dion Cross, who had 82 in 1994-95. Jacobsen is the sixth Stanford player to score more than 600 points in a season. He has 602.
