Principal’s Son Faces Weapons Charge
The Orange County district attorney’s office filed a felony weapons possession charge Friday against the son of the principal at Santa Margarita Catholic High School, a private school in Rancho Santa Margarita.
Robert Hemenway, 18, a former student at the school, had a gun in his car while parked in the school’s parking lot in January, said Tori Richards, a district attorney spokeswoman.
The charge, possession of a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school campus, carries a potential five-year prison sentence, Richards said.
Hemenway is also charged with a misdemeanor for driving with a gun in his car in February, Richards said.
Another person saw Hemenway with the gun and reported it to sheriff’s deputies, Richards said.
Hemenway is the son of Santa Margarita Principal Merritt Hemenway, she added.
