Nguyen Defeats Reitz for Junior Tennis Title

Top-seeded Kim Nguyen, a senior at Saddleback High, won the girls’ 18 division at the Long Beach Junior Tennis Championships with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over second-seeded Brittany Reitz of Corona del Mar Sunday.
In the third-place match, Natalie Braverman of Newport Harbor defeated Tracy Lin of Canyon, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
In the boys’ 18 singles final, fourth-seeded Doug Stewart of Malibu defeated second-seeded Matt Loucks of Irvine, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. In the boys’ 16 final, top-seeded Jack Li of University defeated second-seeded Brandon Wai of San Diego, 6-4, 6-4.
FOOTBALL
Grant Wagner, a quarterback from Santa Ana College and Esperanza High, has signed to play at Adams State, an NCAA Division II school in Alamosa, Colo., Santa Ana Coach Dave Ogas said.
Wagner is a two-time All-Mission Conference selection who holds Santa Ana career records for pass completions (309), yards passing (4,032) and touchdown passes (37). He passed for 2,252 yards in 2000, with 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
VOLLEYBALL
Jennifer Kelly has been hired as women’s coach at Concordia, Athletic Director Curt Cattau said.
Kelly will take over for Jody Wise, who is assuming more responsibilities in her position as assistant athletic director. Kelly was an assistant coach under Wise for three seasons, during which the Eagles improved from 6-25 to last season’s record of 19-13.
Kelly was a four-year player at Concordia, graduating in 1996.
SOFTBALL
Scarlett Neal of Edison has signed to play softball at Penn State, Edison Coach Suzy Mathieson said.
Neal, a senior catcher and outfielder, is a four-year varsity letter-winner and was first-team All-Sunset League last year.
