BASKETBALL

Orange Coast College’s Chad Hagedorn has signed to play at Sonoma State. Hagedorn, a 6-foot-4 forward, averaged 17 points and 11 rebounds last season. He was named first-team All-Orange Empire Conference.

* Irvine Valley’s Chris Ferguson has signed to play at Northern Arizona. Ferguson, a 6-3 guard, averaged 14.2 points and 3.9 assists last season. Ferguson, an Irvine High alumnus, played one season at the University of San Diego before transferring to Irvine Valley.

FOOTBALL

Santa Ana College running back Steve Warfield and wide receiver James Aldana have committed to play at Chapman next season, Don offensive coordinator Geoff Jones announced.

SWIMMING

Irvine High swimmers Gonzo Shimura and Suruk Pattanasinth have signed to compete at UC Irvine, according to Anteater Coach Charlie Schober.

TRACK AND FIELD

The seventh Steve Scott Invitational takes place Sunday at UC Irvine. The meet features competitors from around the world.

Field events begin at 8:30 a.m. and running events at 9:20 a.m.

Ticket are $5. UC Irvine students with identification will be admitted free. For information: (949) 824-9467.

GOLF

The Big West Conference named UC Irvine’s Paul Smolinski golf coach of the year.

UCI’s Jeff Coburn and Long Beach State’s John Mallinger were selected to the first team. Irvine’s Mike Lavery and Ryan Armstrong were named to the second team, along with Long Beach’s Nick Seymour and Brian Merrick.

Long Beach’s Marie Louise Juul and Heeyound Cho were named to the women’s first team.

TENNIS

The Big West named Long Beach State’s Jenny Hilt coach of the year and 49ers’ singles player Anastasia Dvornikova player of the year.

Long Beach teammate Mindy Carvalho earned first-team singles’ honors, along with UC Irvine’s Jonni Seymour. On the men’s side, UC Irvine’s Oliver Schweitzer made the singles’ first team and earned doubles’ honors with teammate David Matthew. Matthew and Chris Ma were also named all-conference second-team singles.

SOFTBALL

Santa Ana College’s Marie Caballero was named player of the year by Orange Empire Conference coaches. Caballero led the conference in hitting with a .496 average and hit .500 in conference play. She was 6-1 with a 0.11 earned-run average against conference opponents.

Jackie Boxley of Cypress was named coach of the year, and Riverside’s Rachael Bermudez was named pitcher of the year.

SECOND TEAM--Wendi Kralich and Deanna Miranda (Santa Ana); Lolani Alvarez, Michelle Cross, Mikki Greenwood and Natalie Sharp (Cypress); Loraine Pinedo (Fullerton); Tiffany Johnson and Jennifer Reinig (Golden West); Michelle Barker and Jessica May (Riverside); Meredith Miles and Renee Snyder (Orange Coast).
