Wi Goes Distance and Wins

Charlie Wi of North Hills sank a seven-foot birdie putt on the seventh playoff hole to win the $300,000 SK Telecom Open on Sunday at Seoul.

Wi, a graduate of Westlake High and the 1990 California Amateur champion, beat Kang Wook-Soon of South Korea.

Kang holed a pitch shot for eagle on the sixth extra hole, but Wi prolonged the playoff by sinking a five-foot eagle putt.

Simon Yates of Scotland dropped out of the playoff on the fifth extra hole when he made par while Wi and Kang were making birdies.

Wi collected $48,450 and leads the Asian PGA Tour with $132,562 in seven events this year.

Track and Field

Chris Morgan of Taft High, defending state champion in the boys’ 110-meter high hurdles, has signed with Arizona State.

Morgan, who has the fastest high hurdles time in the state this year at 13.90, is defending City champion in the high hurdles, two-time defending champion in the long jump and placed second in the 100 last year.

Baseball

First baseman Tim Arroyo, shortstop J.T. Stotts and designated hitter Robert Smith of Cal State Northridge were selected to the All-Big West Conference team.

Pitchers Mike Frick and Bill Murphy were selected to the second team.

Arroyo ranked among the conference’s top 10 in eight offensive categories, including home runs (12), runs batted in (64) and batting average (.365).

Smith, a transfer from Oklahoma State, and Stotts both batted .409 to lead the Big West.

Jeff Durfee, coach at St. Francis for two years, has resigned. The Golden Knights went 23-22-2 under Durfee, who will remain a social studies teacher.

Volleyball

Oscar Avelar and James Zandueta of Monroe have been selected co-players of the year in the Valley Mission League.

Steve Burkhart, a three-time Western State Conference coach of the year at Moorpark College, has been selected boys’ coach at Pacifica High in Oxnard. He will continue to coach the women’s team at Moorpark.

Skating

A new private skate park opens Saturday at 5 p.m. in Northridge.

The facility, located at 9305 Shirley Ave., will charge $7 to $10 for two- and three-hour sessions. It will be open weekdays from 10:30 a.m. to 1:15 a.m. and weekends from 8:30 a.m. to 1:15 a.m.

Skaters can rent helmets, knee and elbow pads.

Miscellany

Cal State Northridge will stage its annual golf tournament July 16 at Porter Valley Country Club in Northridge.

Cross-Country

Notre Dame High is searching for a boys’ and girls’ coach after the resignation of Bob Macias.

Macias guided the Knights’ boys’ team to sixth-place finishes in the state Division IV final in 1997 and ’98.
