Madrigal Making His Point

Proving his knockout of Pedro Pena was no fluke, bantamweight Carlos Madrigal of Oxnard stopped Miguel Angel Granados of Mexico City in the third round Thursday night before 3,985 at the Arrowhead Pond.

Madrigal (16-2) stunned Pena, a former USBA champion, two months ago with a first-round knockout and he seemed intent on making short work of Granados too. In the first round, he pinned Granados on the ropes with power shots to the head. In the second, he sent Granados to the canvas with a left hook-overhand right combination. He finished him off at 2 minutes 51 seconds of the third with a left hook to the body.

Granados staggered to his feet at the count of 10 as referee James Jen-Kin was waving his arms.

“I risked more than I was supposed to,” Madrigal said. “But my goal is to make the people happy.”

Madrigal, who is hoping his recent performances will earn him a title shot, said, “I stated my point tonight that I’m a strong super featherweight.”

La Habra super middleweight Librado Andrade tuned up for his first national television appearance with a second-round knockout of Pacoima’s Harold Lowe. Andrade (9-0), who will fight Jimmy Hagar (15-1) of Springfield, Mo., on a June 19 ESPN2 card at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, didn’t find out he was fighting Lowe until Thursday morning.

Andrade probably could have knocked out an overmatched and out-of-shape Lowe (1-6) on five minutes’ notice. He battered him with vicious combinations to the head for a round and a half, then stopped him with a right uppercut.

In a six-round lightweight bout, Adam Gonzalez (7-4-4) won a unanimous decision over Jose Hernandez (4-5-2) of Reno. In a women’s bantamweight bout, Bertha Gonzalez (3-3) of Panorama City handed Anaheim’s Mary Duron (2-1) her first loss in a four-round split decision.

Heavyweight Shane Harris (1-2) of Ventura probably ended the short career of Westminster’s Phillip Reynolds (1-1), stopping him at 1:31 of the first round.
