49ers Are Upended by Marist

Long Beach State’s postseason ended quickly Saturday when the 49ers lost to Marist, 7-6, in an elimination game at an NCAA regional at Stanford.

Tim Bittner (8-3) pitched 6 1/3 innings and Marist (33-20-1) used a five-run third inning to beat Long Beach, which lost its opener to Texas on Friday.

Bobby Crosby was four for four with a home run for the 49ers (35-23).

Texas (36-24) advanced to the regional final by defeating Stanford, 4-3. Sam Anderson hit a two-run homer during a four-run rally by the Longhorns in the sixth inning.

Albert Montes earned the victory and Brantley Jordan earned the save.

Jonny Ash drove in all of Stanford’s runs.

Stanford (43-15) advanced to a rematch today against Texas by eliminating Marist, 6-0, Saturday night.

In other regionals:

Play at South Bend, Ind., was suspended because of rain with UC Santa Barbara leading Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 12-7, in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The game is scheduled to resume today, and will be followed by a game between Notre Dame and Florida International.

The regional will conclude Monday.

Cal was eliminated after losing to Virginia Commonwealth, 11-2, at Baton Rouge, La.

Cal (39-25) had earlier eliminated Minnesota, 9-3, behind homers from Rob Meyer and Clint Hoover.

Virginia Commonwealth (40-18) plays defending national champion Louisiana State today in the final. LSU (42-19-1) beat Virginia Commonwealth, 13-9, on Saturday.

Tim Whitaker hit his 20th home run and David Marchbanks earned the victory as South Carolina defeated Princeton, 11-7, at Columbia, S.C.

South Carolina (46-18) advanced to today’s championship game against Central Florida (51-12), which defeated South Carolina, 8-6, earlier Saturday.

Tom Farmer pitched seven shutout innings, and Javy Rodriguez had three hits and three RBIs as Miami defeated Florida, 6-2, at Coral Gables, Fla.

The Hurricanes (46-12), who have won 10 games in a row, will play Stetson for the regional title.

Stetson (43-16) eliminated Florida (35-27) with a 6-3 victory.

Tony Richie doubled twice and drove in two runs to lead Florida State to a 10-6 victory over Auburn at Tallahassee, Fla.

Auburn (37-20) later eliminated Jacksonville, 3-2, and will meet Florida State (45-17) today in the championship game.

Matthew Brinson hit two homers--a solo shot and a three-run blast--to lead Mississippi State to a 4-3 victory over Delaware at Columbus, Ohio.

Mississippi State (38-22) will play in the final against Kent State (32-29), which eliminated host Ohio State, 9-8, and beat Delaware, 12-11.

Clemson (40-20) pounded out a season-high 23 hits against six pitchers in a 24-4 victory over Seton Hall at Clemson, S.C.

Seton Hall (34-23-1) came back later and defeated South Alabama, 8-7, to advance to the regional final today against Clemson.

John Cole hit a solo home run and R.D. Spiehs pitched 5 2/3 innings of shutout relief as Nebraska (47-14) stayed unbeaten at Lincoln, Neb., with a 5-4 victory over Rutgers.

The same teams will meet in the final today after Rutgers (42-16) eliminated Northern Iowa, 6-5.

Chad Felty drove in four runs and Brian Fischer gave up five hits in seven innings as Coastal Carolina stayed unbeaten at Athens, Ga., with a 12-3 victory over Georgia Southern.

Coastal Carolina (42-18) plays in the final against Georgia (43-19), which eliminated Georgia Tech, 13-5, then defeated Georgia Southern, 10-9, in 11 innings.
