Villa Park in Badminton Final Today
Top-seeded Villa Park will try to dethrone defending champion Alhambra today in the Southern Section Division I badminton final at the Orange County Badminton Club in Orange.
The Spartans (14-0) advanced to the final for the second time in three years by defeating South El Monte, 15-4, in the semifinals. Second-seeded Alhambra (19-0) defeated third-seeded Garden Grove, 10-9.
Villa Park has been favored to win the title the past three seasons, but was stopped each time by Garden Grove.
Villa Park won three of the four Southern Section individual titles this year. The Spartans are led by Raymond Wong, the Southern Section boys’ singles champion, and Mesinee Mangkalakiri and Connie Hwang, the girls’ doubles champions. Wong and Mangkalakiri won the mixed doubles title.
The match begins at 3 p.m.
