All-Star Softball Teams Are Named

Michelle Whiteman of Valencia and Carrie Wisen of Sonora are among the senior softball players who have been selected for the Orange County Coaches All-Star Game June 7 at Barber Park in Irvine.

Whiteman, who pitched Valencia into the Southern Section quarterfinals and lost a 23-inning, 1-0 game to Kennedy, will represent the American team, comprised of players from the Century, Empire, Golden West, Olympic, Orange, South Coast and Sunset leagues. Wisen pitched Sonora into the semifinals and will be on the National team, composed of players from the Academy, Freeway, Garden Grove, Sea View and Serra leagues. No players from the Pacific Coast League were selected. Foothill’s Joe Gonzalez and Aliso Niguel’s Joe Miller are head coaches.

* Kristen Baker, center fielder and leadoff batter for Empire League co-champion Cypress High, has signed with Louisiana Monroe.

BASEBALL

* Kent Madole has been named coach at Irvine Valley College, Athletic Director Aracely Mora said. Madole replaces Stacy Parker, who left earlier this month to take over the program at Mt. San Antonio College.

Madole, Parker’s top assistant this season, played at Foothill High and later at Pacific.

* Santa Ana College first baseman Tony Alcantar (Katella High) has committed to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and utility player Kevin Rios has committed to North Alabama, Don Coach Don Sneddon said.

Alcantar was co-MVP of the Orange Empire Conference this season after batting .420 in conference play. He led the Dons in average (.427), RBIs (64), on-base percentage (.502) and stolen bases (16).

* Saddleback College second baseman Jeff LaRue signed with Washington State, Saddleback Coach Jack Hodges said. LaRue, a Santa Margarita High graduate, batted .346 for Saddleback this season.

VOLLEYBALL

Troy Abbey has been hired to coach the women’s team at Santa Ana College, the school announced. Abbey coached the girls’ team at La Habra High for four seasons, winning two Southern Section championships.

* Serena Bountour, a senior at Huntington Beach, has signed to play at New York University. Bountour was a first-team All-Southern Section Division I selection.
