Newport Beach Newport Harbor 34, Irvine Woodbridge 7--Adam Kerns caught six passes for 187 yards and three touchdowns for the host Sailors (8-0-1, 4-0), who completed their Sea View League schedule with a perfect record.
Woodbridge (6-2, 2-1), which lost its top two running backs to season-ending knee injuries two weeks ago, was forced to an aerial game with disastrous results. The Sailors intercepted four Tim Kegel passes in the first half, one of them in the end zone, and held the Warriors scoreless while building a 21-0 lead.
Jim Rothwell had an interception on the first play from scrimmage to give Newport Harbor the ball at the Woodbridge 10-yard line. Matt Casserly scored three plays later for a 7-0 lead. After a Woodbridge punt, Newport Harbor put together a seven-minute drive that ended in an eight-yard scoring run by Dartangan Johnson.
Newport Harbor’s Morgan Craig completed 10 of 14 passes for 214 yards and three touchdowns. Newport Harbor completes the regular season with a nonleague game against Westchester (7-1) at home next Friday.
J.J. Chavers was a bright spot for Woodbridge, catching nine passes for 109 yards.
