Helicopters, Bomber Fight Forest Fires
Forestry officials used helicopters and a bomber to drop water and fire retardant on about 6,300 burning acres, mostly the work of arsonists, primarily in southeastern Tennessee. The Federal Emergency Management Agency agreed to provide financial assistance to Tennessee to battle the fires, which grew with dry, windy conditions continuing and no rain predicted.
State officials requested assistance in battling multiple wildfires in Bledsoe, Grundy, Marion, Polk and Sequatchie counties.
FEMA officials said they received reports from the state over the weekend that 15 fires had burned more than 15,000 acres and were threatening the communities of Altamont, Dunlap and Palmer.
