San Marino Survives in Overtime

Alessandro Lazzarini’s sudden-death overtime goal gave San Marino a 9-8 boys’ water polo victory over Pico Rivera El Rancho on Tuesday in a Southern Section Division III wild-card match.

Lazzarini, San Marino’s second-leading scorer, missed seven shots before making the game-winner from six meters to advance the Titans (19-9) into a first-round game against top-seeded Manhattan Beach Mira Costa.

Charles Shu scored three goals for San Marino, while goalkeeper Adrian Lok had 21 saves, and shut out El Rancho’s top scorer, Andy Ibarra. Andrew Laffie scored three times for El Rancho.

In Division VI:

Rancho Alamitos 13, La Puente 2--Sophomore Tyler Chapin had five goals and Travis Ruud had three as host Rancho Alamitos (8-4)--which next plays top-seeded Damien--won its first playoff game in more than 25 years.

In Southern Section girls’ tennis, wild card, Division I:

Newhall Hart 9, Santa Fe 9 (Hart wins on games, 77-65)--Sara Jacobs swept three sets and lost only two games as Hart (8-8) outlasted Santa Fe (10-7).

In Division III:

El Modena 10, Sonora 8--Tara Henry and Jessica Henja swept, 6-3, 6-1, 7-5 to provide the difference for visiting El Modena (11-7). Sonora finished 13-6.

Savanna 10, Cypress 8--The doubles teams of Kathy Cuevas and Pearl Parker, and Jennifer Kim and Cynthia Tran, swept for host Savanna (12-5). Cypress is 9-5.

In Southern Section girls’ volleyball, first round, Division I-A:

Kaiser def. San Bernardino, 15-12, 15-12, 15-12--Amber Jackson had nine kills and Paula Pagano had eight for Kaiser (14-7).

El Toro d. Irvine University, 15-11, 15-7, 11-15, 15-6--Heather Quinn had 21 kills and three blocks for El Toro (18-6)..

In Division II-AA:

Sunny Hills def. West Valley, 5-15, 15-12, 15-6, 0-15, 15-11--After getting shut out in the fourth game, and led by Jordan Danly’s 19 kills in the match, the visiting Lancers (9-8) rallied for the victory. Jessica Nelthorpe had 17 kills for West Valley (9-6).

In Division II-A:

Brea Olinda def. Paloma Valley, 15-7, 15-11, 13-15, 15-6--Brittani Lumsden had 39 digs, 13 kills and six blocks for Brea (13-4).

El Modena def. Placentia Valencia, 8-15, 12-15, 15-13, 15-10, 15-5--Ariana Munoz had 12 kills and 13 digs to lead El Modena (10-8) from a two-game deficit.

Torrance def. Norwalk 14-16, 4-15, 15-4, 15-8, 15-11--Sara Mooney had 15 kills and 17 digs and Corie Johnson had 12 kills and nine digs as host Torrance (15-6) avoided the upset by Norwalk (8-7).

Garden Grove def. Tustin, 9-15, 16-14, 14-16, 15-10, 16-14--Renee Johnson and Jessica Nunez each had 12 kills for host Garden Grove (11-6). Tustin is 11-6.

In Division IV-AA:

L.A. Milken Community def. Glendale Holy Family, 15-5, 9-15, 12-15, 15-10, 15-12--Rachel Gross had 18 kills, Tracey Fagelbaum had 28 assists and Dani Helfet 20 digs as Milken (14-6) rallied to win the last two games.

In City Section girls’ volleyball, first round, Championship division:

Westchester d. Sun Valley Poly 15-7, 15-0, 15-1--Kamilah Mayfield had nine kills and Nikki Seidlin had seven kills and seven aces, and served the entire second game for host Westchester (12-2).
