Anaheim Esperanza defeated top-seeded Anaheim Servite, 7-6, in a Southern Section Division II boys’ water polo quarterfinal game at Placentia El Dorado High on Saturday, and Bell Gardens toppled host and top-seeded Manhattan Beach Mira Costa, 10-8, in a Division III quarterfinal.
Esperanza (15-11) limited Servite (27-4) to two goals in the first half and held a 6-3 lead with four minutes remaining.
“The kids were pretty shocked afterward,” said Servite Coach Jim Sprague. “But we didn’t perform well today.”
James Low had three goals and Barrett Sheridan made 14 saves for Esperanza.
Bell Gardens (28-3) built a 5-1 lead on Mira Costa (21-7), the defending champions.
