Don Warhurst, 81; Ex-Football Coach at Cal Poly Pomona

Don Warhurst, 81, a former head football coach and athletic director at Cal Poly Pomona, died Saturday at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center.

He began his tenure at the university in 1957 and was the head football coach for 10 years. His teams compiled a 56-33-2 record during that time, and he was the Broncos’ winningest football coach. His best team was the 1962 squad, which went 9-1. He was athletic director from 1969 to 1980.

Warhurst began his coaching career after serving in the Navy during World War II. He was an assistant football coach at Santa Ana High School and held the same post at San Bernardino Valley College. He was the head football coach at Modesto High School from 1951 to 1956.
