David Toms got better in a hurry. The defending champion shook off the rust of a monthlong layoff and an ugly cut-missing effort a week ago with a seven-under-par 64 Thursday in the first round of the Michelob Championship at Williamsburg, Va.

Toms got to eight under after 16 holes with a scrambling birdie, but gave a shot back on his 17th hole. He closed with a par and established himself as perhaps the man to beat.

Shigeki Maruyama, Neal Lancaster, Jimmy Green, J.J. Henry and Michael Muehr had 65s to share second place.

Ty Tryon, the 17-year-old high school junior from Orlando, Fla., making his pro debut, bogeyed his first hole and shot a 76. Tryon this week signed endorsement deals with Callaway and Target Stores and then got a sponsor’s exemption to play in the Michelob Classic.
