Steve Beuerlein’s comeback attempt from an elbow injury is over, for now. The Denver Bronco quarterback was put on injured reserve and will have more surgery, probably next week.

To take Beuerlein’s spot on the roster, the Broncos signed tight end Matt Dominguez, who had been on their practice squad. Tight end Austin Wheatley was added to the practice squad.

“We didn’t feel Steve would be able to go probably until the 10th or 11th week, at best,” Denver Coach Mike Shanahan said. “And the chances are he would still have to have surgery.”

Shanahan said doctors felt if Beuerlein started throwing hard again, he might suffer another in a series of setbacks.

The upcoming surgery will repair a slightly torn tendon in the elbow.

Super Bowl MVP Ray Lewis returned to practice after missing two consecutive days because of flu and elbow tendinitis, but his status for the Baltimore Ravens’ game against Tennessee is in doubt.

“We’ll have to wait and see up until game time,” Raven Coach Brian Billick said. “He’s still listed as questionable. He ran around and did what was asked of him.”

Lewis left the training complex without talking to reporters, but he said Wednesday that he will play Sunday against the Titans.

Chicago Bear defensive tackle Henry Taylor was suspended for four games by the league for violating the league’s anabolic steroid and related substance policy.

The Bears said Taylor’s suspension will begin Sunday against Atlanta and run through Oct. 28, when Chicago faces San Francisco.
