Nebraska Thunders by Baylor

On a day filled with lightning, Thunder Collins helped No. 4 Nebraska roll past Baylor.

Nebraska rushed for 641 yards, including 165 by Collins, as the Cornhuskers overcame five first-half fumbles to rout the Bears, 48-7, in a game interrupted for 36 minutes by lightning at Waco, Texas.

“We had hoped to pass more,” Nebraska Coach Frank Solich said of his team’s play-action game. “We were hoping to make them bite on the run, but we wound up making a lot of big plays on the ground.”

Nebraska (7-0, 3-0 Big 12) attempted only nine passes, tying an NCAA record with four rushers topping the 100-yard mark. It had happened only four times before, the last by Army in 1984.

Quarterback Eric Crouch ran for 132 yards and three scores, Dahrran Diedrick added 137 yards and a touchdown, and Judd Davies had 119 yards and two touchdowns.

The Cornhuskers’ rushing total was the second-best in school history behind a 677-yard effort against New Mexico State in 1982.

Baylor has lost 24 straight Big 12 games and haven’t beaten a league opponent since a 31-24 win over Kansas on Oct. 10, 1998.

“Our offense is a power game. It’s what we’re best at,” Crouch said.

Baylor’s offense made little use of its chances. The Bears (2-3, 0-3) rank last in the league in offense and managed just 31 yards in the first half while the score was still close.

No. 11 Texas 45, Oklahoma St. 17--Chris Simms threw a career-best five touchdown passes, two to Roy Williams in the final 25 seconds of a 31-point second quarter, and Texas rebounded from its first loss of the season to win at Stillwater, Okla.

The Longhorns (5-1, 2-1) lost, 14-3, last week to Oklahoma, a game that crippled their conference title hopes, and they started slowly against Oklahoma State (2-4, 0-3). But the offense began clicking late in the first quarter and rolled over the Cowboys, who faltered after a fast start.

Simms finished 18 of 30 for 235 yards. His five TD passes tied the school record set by James Brown against Baylor in 1994.

Cedric Benson, who played only one snap against Oklahoma, had 131 yards on 31 carries.

It was the first 100-yard game by a Texas freshman since Ricky Williams in 1995.

No. 20 Colorado 31, No. 25 Texas A&M; 21--Kory Mossoni forced a fumble with a sack and Joey Johnson recovered the ball and ran 52 yards for a touchdown with 58 seconds left as Colorado won at Boulder.

Texas A&M;, which trailed, 24-14, early in the final quarter, got a quick touchdown on Mark Farris’ third touchdown pass of the game. The Aggies (5-1, 2-1) then appeared to be driving for a tying field goal and possible go-ahead touchdown when Farris was sacked from behind by blitzing linebacker Mossoni.

Craig Ochs directed Colorado (5-1, 3-0) to 18 consecutive points as the Buffaloes rallied from a 14-6 deficit.

Texas Tech 38, No. 24 Kansas St. 19--Kliff Kingsbury threw for 409 yards and four touchdowns for Texas Tech at Lubbock, Texas.

Running back Wes Welker caught two touchdown passes, including a 60-yarder, the longest scoring play this season for Texas Tech (3-2, 1-2).

It was the Red Raiders’ first victory in conference play and the first time Coach Mike Leach has beaten a ranked team in five tries since taking over at Tech at the end of the 1999 season.

Kansas State fell to 2-3, 0-3.

Iowa St. 20, Missouri 14--Ennis Haywood ran for 120 yards and two touchdowns at Columbia, Mo., to lead the Cyclones.

The score was 14-14 late in the fourth quarter before two field goals by Tony Yelk.

Iowa State improved to 4-1, 2-1. The Tigers dropped to 2-3, 1-2.
