The Mariners’ 15-hit, 14-run rampage in Game 3 put the spotlight on Manager Lou Piniella’s pregame meeting, but Piniella said he doesn’t really like meetings and Saturday’s was his first since opening day.

“I think that basically if you have too many [meetings], they lose a purpose,” Piniella said. “At the same time, we’ve got a veteran team that’s very professional, that knows what needs to be done, but I did want to say a couple of things that I thought were important.”

While there was a fire-and-brimstone touch to Piniella’s meeting, it was aimed at relaxing the Mariners.

“We’re the ones with the ‘S’ on our chests,” Piniella reminded his players. He then threw a copy of the New York Daily News on the floor and said, “This is the Daily News, not the Daily Planet.”
