Ed Croson doesn’t consider himself a football genius, but he’s working wonders at Van Nuys Birmingham High.

The Patriots (7-0, 3-0 in league) appear headed for a second consecutive West Valley League championship after routing Granada Hills, 34-7, Friday night. Since Croson arrived last season to take over as coach, the Patriots’ record is 17-2.

Quarterback Scott Jensen is flourishing under Croson’s one-back, four-receiver passing scheme. He completed 11 of 15 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns, giving him 22 touchdown passes this season. He has completed 69% of his passes with three interceptions.

Kevin McCleary scored two touchdowns and rushed for 111 yards in 17 carries. Chad Green caught a 21-yard touchdown pass and scored on a 51-yard fumble return. The Patriots’ defense recorded eight sacks, including three by Anthony Borbon and two by Daren Guzman.

Granada Hills (5-2, 1-2) fell behind, 21-0, in the first half. Two interceptions and a fumble deep in Birmingham territory left the Highlanders frustrated and wondering what could have been. Luke Sniewski of Granada Hills completed 11 of 26 passes for 204 yards. Jermaine Bogle rushed for 102 yards in 12 carries. Jason Rilloraza caught seven passes for 130 yards.
