“Buscando America (Seeking America)” by Roy Conboy begins with a tussle between two Aztec gods. The loser, Quetzalcoatl, finds himself bereft of his powers and transported to contemporary Los Angeles, where he must cope with tourists, a drug dealer, a cop and various other manifestations of modern America.

The play was first seen in 1990 at Rancho Santiago College in Santa Ana, where Conboy was teaching. This revival in the same city is by Teatro Indigena Theatre Company, an Orange County troupe seeking to carry on the grassroots tradition of El Teatro Campesino, the 1960s wellspring of Mexican American theater.* “Buscando America (Seeking America),” presented by Teatro Indigena Theatre Company at El Salvador Center, 1825 W.
