Penberthy Re-Signs With Lakers

Share

The Lakers signed guard Mike Penberthy to a one-year, partially guaranteed contract on Monday, four days before the opening of their training camp in Honolulu.

Penberthy averaged 5.0 points in 53 games for the Lakers last season, when he made 39.6% of his three-point attempts, tied for 26th in the NBA.

He joins a crowded Laker backcourt that includes new additions Lindsey Hunter and Mitch Richmond along with starters Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher. Fisher is recovering from surgery to repair a stress fracture in his right foot.

The Lakers ranked 20th in the league in three-point shooting last year, a deficiency that led to the signings of Hunter, Richmond and now Penberthy, critical particularly in light of the new rule allowing zone defenses.

The club also announced it has added a preseason game in Honolulu. The Lakers will play the Golden State Warriors on Oct. 7 and Oct. 9, and will schedule a third game against the Warriors at a Southern California location to be determined.
