Fire Destroys Hundreds of Shantytown Homes
From Times Wire Reports
A fire razed at least 300 shanties in Manila’s port area, leaving at least 1,600 people homeless, officials said.
Investigators were trying to determine the cause, focusing on reports that a drug dealer ignited the blaze, said Chief Superintendent Francisco Senot, head of the fire protection bureau.
The fire also burned down an occupied low-income tenement, another that was unoccupied and an empty warehouse, Senot said. No deaths or serious injuries were reported.
